Our Eco Pledge

We know how lucky we are to work in such a beautiful environment. Our team often have meetings and lunches in the garden during the warmer months and see the abundance of wildlife that lives within our little brick walls. From wondering ladybirds and bumbling bees, to emerald dragon flies and fumbling hedgehogs. Outside of the walls we have 137 acres of park land home to a vast array of birds including pheasants, woodpeckers, and owls.

We are truly humbled to be looking after this little hive of wildlife in a city location, but our values and company ethics take us one step further. Beyond our boundaries there’s a whole world in need of help. So, here is our companies pledge to support our planet and place the environment at the heart of our business.

In The Garden

We are organic gardeners here in The Walled Garden. Over the past four years, we have transitioned to being pesticide and fungicide free, avoiding any chemicals that could harm bees and insects.

Instead, when tackling pests, we use natural sprays, nematodes, and our hands! This year, due to the heavy rain, we’ve had an influx of slugs and snails. We are currently trialling copper tape and wool pellets to protect our dahlias from being munched. We also encourage birds to help with pest control by providing bird boxes and bird feed in the winter.

In recent years, we have noticed the appearance of box caterpillars on our box plants. We use Xentari spray to tackle this problem, effectively eradicating the caterpillars without harming other wildlife.

We are also moving towards using perennial plants, rather than bedding plants that need to be replaced annually. Our compost bays are slowly developing, and this year we have used our own leaf mould to mulch some of the borders. Any compost we purchase is peat-free, and the alpaca poo we used as mulch this year came from a local farm.

As much as possible, we enjoy sowing seeds, taking cuttings, and dividing perennials to provide us with new plants.

We truly love this garden that we have the privilege to look after and believe it is essential to care for the wildlife within it while leaving the smallest footprint possible.
